The rugby community in L’Aquila, Italy, is grieving the tragic death of 15-year-old Ruggero Canocchi, a promising young player whose life was reportedly cut short following a serious road accident while he was returning home after rugby training.
The crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, September 14, near the Arcobaleno Sports Centre in L’Aquila. According to reports, Canocchi was driving a mini-car when he lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently collided with a tree. Traffic police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Despite the seriousness of the collision, Canocchi was reportedly conscious at the scene. He was able to communicate with police officers and emergency responders before being transported to a hospital, where doctors worked to treat his injuries. The teenager suffered severe internal bleeding and underwent two surgical procedures as medical teams attempted to save his life. Sadly, the treatment was unsuccessful, and Canocchi later died in hospital.
