The University of Connecticut community is mourning the death of 22-year-old Zachary Barry, a senior student whose life was cut short following a motor vehicle crash in Mansfield. According to state police, Barry was traveling along Hunting Lodge Road when his vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a tree. He sustained serious, life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Barry died the following day, September 16, 2026.
UConn confirmed Barry’s death in a statement, describing him as a senior in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources who was studying Plant Science with a concentration in Turfgrass Science. Originally from Scarborough, Maine, Barry joined the UConn community in fall 2022.
During his time at the university, Barry was a member of the Men’s Track and Field team from 2022 through 2024. More recently, he was involved with the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity, where he became part of the university’s student community.
Barry also gained practical experience in his field. During the summer, he completed an internship at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, where he worked on developing his knowledge of golf course conditioning and turf health management. The university has extended its condolences to Barry’s family and friends and said information regarding funeral or memorial services had not yet been made available.
UConn officials also encouraged students, faculty, and staff affected by the tragedy to seek support through the university’s mental health and student assistance services. Regional-campus students were encouraged to contact appropriate campus support teams.
As the UConn community grieves, Barry is being remembered by those who knew him for his involvement in academics, athletics, campus life, and his chosen field of study. His family, friends, classmates, teammates, and fraternity members are now facing the difficult loss of a young life with a promising future.
