Winnipeg is mourning the passing of Doug Harvey, a respected entrepreneur and philanthropist who died at the age of 72 following a reported battle with prostate cancer. His death has led to an outpouring of tributes from business leaders, charitable organizations, friends, and members of the Manitoba community who knew him through his decades of work and service.
A lifelong Winnipeg resident, Harvey was raised in the Fort Garry area and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba. He began his career as a sales representative in International Harvester’s Truck Division before taking his first steps into business ownership during the early 1980s.
Over the years, Harvey built an impressive business career that eventually resulted in the creation of the DLH Group. The organization expanded to include several companies, among them Maxim Truck & Trailer, Tereck Diesel, Summit Trailer, Arne’s Welding, and Trout River Industries. Together, the businesses grew into major employers, providing jobs for roughly 1,000 people across Canada.
His achievements in the business community were formally recognized in 2022 when he was inducted into the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame. However, Harvey’s influence reached far beyond entrepreneurship. He devoted considerable time and resources to charitable and community organizations, including the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, FortWhyte Alive, Economic Development Winnipeg, the Business Council of Manitoba, and the Winnipeg Airport Authority.
Cancer research and care became especially meaningful to Harvey. He served for more than 15 years on the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation board and spent five of those years as chair. Despite facing prostate cancer himself, he continued advocating for improved cancer care and research.
His dedication was particularly evident through the Challenge For Life fundraiser. Harvey originally set a goal of raising $1 million, but the campaign eventually brought in approximately $1.87 million to support cancer-related initiatives. Harvey was also a passionate supporter of food security. Harvest Manitoba remembered him as an exceptional friend and advocate whose generosity contributed to providing millions of meals to people and families facing food insecurity.
Beyond his professional and philanthropic accomplishments, Harvey was devoted to his family. He shared his life with his wife, Jan Shute, and together they raised three children and became grandparents to six grandchildren. His legacy will be remembered not only through the businesses he built, but also through the countless people and causes he supported throughout Manitoba
